That's pretty awesome. How well does it hold? I've got mine JB welded to a little manfrotto mount, but I haven't fully tested it to see how well it will hold up. This might be a better solution if the weight doesn't flip out from the mounts.

I post some more pictures. The monitor holder is very well fixed and sturdy, you can shake the rig, till the tripod, and the monitor is still stayed :-)

Time for me to try this. My JB weld failed twice. Thankfully it broke while I was adjusting it so it didn't come crashing to the floor. Anything you'd change? Like a forward/backwards swivel or something?

I got the FX820, too. But I think it is not stable enough (e.g. using it freehand and not on a tripod)

I'll post my thought soon. Good job. I can't imagine that it holds that good. Very nice find!!

I will post some additional pictures soon. I have added an adjustable mini head at the center of the wood pad, so I can till my monitor forward, backward, left or right. The monitor is perfectly working for me.

The adjustable mini head is from Targus mini tripod.

    Two questions:
    1. Is it possible to mount it upside-down because of the 35mm adapter picture? Will this monitor holder hold?
    2. Where do you attach the holder itself exactly on the tripod?

    Hi Eugenia,

    1. Is it possible to mount it upside-down because of the 35mm adapter picture? Will this monitor holder hold?

I may not understand your question about upside-down mount. Sony FX820 allows to flip its screen, there is no need to mount the monitor upside-down while you are using a DOF adapter. Anyway, if you want to mount the monitor upside-down, my DIY monitor still works. The clamps in the monitor holder should hold the base of Sony FX820 firmly.

    2. Where do you attach the holder itself exactly on the tripod?

I attached my monitor through Shrig rig. If you want to mount the monitor to a tripod, I think that you need to do a DIY extension bar where the extension bar will be mounted to the tripod, your camera and monitor holder will be mounted on the extension bar.

I might get the Shrig rig, so I would have the same setup. Will I need to buy anything more though, or the default shrig rig will have the components needed to mount the monitor holder?

Oh man, I hope I can find something like that in my local hardware shop. Those would be perfect as DIY rail mounts.

    Hi Eugenia,

Shrigg rig provides 1/4 and 1/2 screw hole on top, you need 1/4 or 1/2 screw to attach the monitor holder to Schrigg rig.

I am posting a variation of my DIY monitor where I use an extension bar to attach to Shrigg rig. I then attach the monitor holder to the extension bar with a Targus mini head.

You can buy a Targus mini tripod, remove tripod legs and use the mini head.

What's that little bar attaching the grips to the mini-tripod head made out of? It looks a lot better than the wooden block you had before.

My friend, who is machinist, gave me the bar. The bar material is Delrin.
For the monitor holder, the bar is 1/4 thick. For the extension bar, it is 1/2 thick.

quick question, is the Sony DVP-FX820 just as good as the DVP-FX810? I have a used one at my work for $115.00 Only thing that's missing is the car adapter..But before I purchase it, I was wandering if it works just as fine as the FX820. Anyone?

No, the FX810 does not have the high-res screen. It's not suitable for what we need it for. Get the FX820 which is the one everyone gets.
