Thread: DIY Acrylic Clapperboard / Slate

  1. #1

Default DIY Acrylic Clapperboard / Slate

I slapped this together in 3 hrs using materials on hand plus some graphic arts materials. works well, is light and is size matched to my 10.9" monitor.
Obviously, it's only useful for close up shots (slate is small)

huh? you don't have to slate where the subject is, just move it closer to the camera, clap, pull focus, action.

But what if he's using 2 cameras?

then he walks over to the other camera and claps after slating the first one? i've done three features and dozens of shorts and we never had a bigger slate than that. :-)

man I remember when we did a helicopter shot of the new york skyline...

well I was going to get the materials to build this today, my day off, until I saw this on ebay, as much as I like DIY it's hard to pass up a good deal so I ordered it

if anyone is interested there are some left,

they didnt pass inspection for whatever reason (each one is different) but the price is right and FREE shipping

Wow, what an awesome DIY job!

It looks so much better than the crummy one I bought a while back: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...roduction.html

Clap boards are cool, and all.

I usually just have the actor hold up fingers.

Takes another person to clap -- lol!!!!

    One guy holds boom mic
    one guy pushing dolly
    me running camera
    actors acting
    no body to clap LOL!!!!!!!!!!

True. but since the slate is about AUDIO sync , the mic has to pick up the 'clap'.
If the mic is a wireless or wired Lav or Shotgun 20' away from camera, it might not pick up the clap. That's why some boards are so BIG, you can bridge the distance between camera and subject more evenly-- while still being able to read the board

Thanks for the Kudos. The B&H version at $28.00 is a better deal. Making this with acrylic is tricky. To get the rub-on type to stick I had to mask off and spray Krylon Matte first, then the lettering, then another hit of matte spray to seal it. The colors were simply printed off my computer- Freehand is the software I use.
Crazy glue etc. and you're done. Nice 'Snap' sound too !

    Good job!

I have some acrylic sheet laying around from another project, I may just see if it fits the bill.

    http://www.estreetplastics.com/

Scroll down and look for their
    "White Plexiglass Sheet"

    A 12"x12" sheet 1/4" thick is $6.69 US.

There's probably other places to get it, though. But this site has cool colors and styles.

Look in the Yellow Pages under "Acrylics" or "Plastics." Most larger cities have distributors and the small amount you'd need for a project this size should be easy to find in their "remnants" or "scraps" bin. Translucent white acrylic is especially common since it's often used in illuminated signage.

I found a plastic store. cost me $10 for one 7.5"x11" and three 1"x11" pieces. not too bad considering i didn't have to cut anything.

Call me crazy but I bought one of these:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Dry_Erase.html

Expensive? Well, I justified the price because I was thinking about buying one of those reference cards (the one with the gray scale/colors) to help with color correction in post. Those were pretty expensive in and of themselves. So I decided, why not throw in a clapper?

It looks to be pretty high quality. Just waiting for it to arrive.
