Default Matrox Intermedia HD Codec free download

Matrox used to lock their HD codecs. They can only be used with the Matrox hardware. I found out in their VFW (Video for Windows) driver 2.0 and 4.0, their Matrox I-Frame HD Codec is unlocked, which means, it can be used with any computer. I have been hiding this fact for a long time until I got a clearance from Matrox that is okay to point to their site to download.

Matrox RT.X2 editing card comes with a Matrox I-Frame Intermedia HD Codec as VFW driver. With that codec, you can use it to replace Lagarith or Huffyuv lossless codec. It gives you a high quality intermedia codec without generating huge files.

I have asked Eugenia (thanks Eugenia) to test it before and she didn't like the quality of it. I myself can't tell too big of the difference. But with the Matrox RT.X2 card I own, it's just straight forward to use such codec.

I actually like the codec, it's just that Vegas has trouble with it, making it impossible for normal editing. The codec does not work in the default Preview("auto") previewing mode (which is the fastest mode for video previewing, with acceptable quality). It has to be used in Preview/Full mode, which requires a secondary 1080p monitor. You can use it in Good/Auto and Best/Auto modes, but these modes are much slower.

Between that roadblock, and the fact that the codec is slower to export with (than either Lagarith or Huffyuv), it makes it a bit less useful for Vegas users. It took 49 seconds for the Matrox codec, 39 for Lagarith, and 28 for Huffyuv.

On the bright side, the Matrox codec creates smaller files without losing much quality (at 100 mbps). It also does not have a gamma shift, it's true RGB encoding, so that's good.

In terms of previewing speed, it's as bad as Lagarith and Huffyuv btw, on my P4 they all do between 2 and 3 fps. :P

But yeah, the real problem is the preview("auto") bug. That's a major roadblock for most people with a single video monitor.

UPDATE: Version 1.0 of the codecs fixes the problem: http://www.matrox.com/video/en/suppo...es/version1.0/

It is not so much of a bug. The codec is designed to be used with the Matrox hardware in Premiere. So I won't be surprise it doesnt work well in Vegas. anyway, it's a free and high quality codec anyway.

This latest one is compatible with Vista 64, but won't install on XP 64. That's what I'm currently running, so I can't test this latest one. It's definitely worth a look for anyone interested in an intermediate codec.
.........but don't take my word for it, test it out for yourself!

Thanks, I'll try this, right now I am testing different codecs for use in After Effects, uncompressed is just too large for me, standard Quicktime is acting hard, so I had to install Quicktime Alternative with MPEG Streamclip, but rendering is long and the file is too big.
Now I'm encoding JPEG2000 to encode a full tape, it's been going for a couple of hours now and it's only at 60%(I have a 3.2GHz dual core).

We utilize a Matrox Axio and an MXO2 mini, and also have the codec installed on other non-Matrox comps and it works great, specially in After Effects.. on a decent comp playback is no problem, does save hard drive space and we have not noticed any reduction in image quality.

I've installed this codec but it's not showing up in TMPGEnc Xpress. I'd like to test it out but for the life of me can't find it in TMPGEnc. Do I need to move some dll around? The settings for the Matrox codec are available by going to Start -> Matrox VFW but I can't get it to work in TMPGEnc. Any help is appreciated!

Can I use this codec if I don't have the Matrox RT.X2 card.

Yes you can. But don't expect a smooth full screen playback when u don't have the matrox hardware. But you can certainly use it in editing

I downloaded the codec you posted above and installed on my pc. It installed in C:\Program Files\Matrox ... but when I go in PPro CS3 and use Export-->Movie, I don't see it in the Export Movie Settings.

Try export to Microsoft AVI, then select from the codec list.
